MAY 2023: SUSTAINABLE JOURNALISM
Why Sustainable Journalism is Essential for a Free Press and a Healthy Democracy
World Press Freedom Day is celebrated every year on May 3rd to raise awareness about the importance of a free press, defend the media from attacks on their independence, and pay tribute to journalists who have lost their lives while performing their duties. It is an opportunity to remind ourselves why a free press is essential for a healthy democracy and to recognize the importance of sustainable journalism in our society. Press freedom is a fundamental right and a cornerstone of democracy. It ensures that citizens have access to information, allows for diverse voices to be heard, and promotes transparency and accountability. Without a free press, it's impossible to hold those in power to account, uncover corruption, or expose wrongdoing. However, press freedom is under threat in many parts of the world. The rise of authoritarianism, the erosion of trust in media, and the economic challenges facing the industry pose significant risks. Sustainable journalism is crucial to overcoming these challenges through finance, climate reporting, and climate-positive dialogue.
